Complete Tattoo Aftercare Guide
You just got an amazing new tattoo — now what? Proper aftercare is the difference between a tattoo that looks stunning for decades and one that fades or scars prematurely. At Rain Ink Tattoo, we take aftercare seriously and provide every client with detailed instructions.
Day 1: The First 24 Hours
Keep the bandage on for at least 2-4 hours after your session. When you remove it, gently wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and fragrance-free soap. Pat dry with a clean paper towel — never rub. Apply a thin layer of the recommended ointment or unscented moisturizer.
Week 1: The Healing Phase
Your tattoo may feel warm, swollen, or tender — this is normal. Wash it gently 2-3 times a day and apply moisturizer. Avoid soaking in water (no baths, swimming pools, or hot tubs). Do not scratch or pick at any peeling skin. Wear loose, breathable clothing over the tattooed area.
Weeks 2-4: Peeling and Settling
Your tattoo will start to peel like a sunburn. This is completely normal and part of the healing process. Continue moisturizing regularly. The colors may look dull during this phase — they will brighten up once fully healed.
Long-Term Tattoo Care
Always apply sunscreen (SPF 30+) to your tattoo when exposed to sunlight. UV rays are the number one cause of tattoo fading. Keep your skin moisturized. Stay hydrated and maintain a healthy lifestyle — your skin health affects your tattoo quality.
Common Aftercare Mistakes to Avoid
Over-moisturizing (a thin layer is enough). Using products with fragrance, alcohol, or harsh chemicals. Exposing the tattoo to direct sunlight too early. Swimming before the tattoo is fully healed. Picking at scabs or peeling skin.
